HOW DOES THE CHARACTER OF THE PROTAGONIST DECLINE IN “THE THIEF AND THE DOGS” AND “THE VISIT”? As we read the two texts, “The Thief and the Dogs” by Naguib Mahfouz and “The Visit” by Friedrich Durrenmatt, we can clearly see a decline in the character of the protagonist. I would define “Decline” as “decrease in the importance of the character to other characters in the text” In the two texts, the protagonists, Said in “The Thief…” and Ill in “The Visit”, experience a ‘loss in importance’. We can see forms of decline: loss of popularity, betrayal, physical decline, and rejection, which are used by the authors to bring out the idea. The loss of popularity of the protagonists is a key factor contributing to the decline. In the beginning of “The Visit”, Ill is described as “…the most popular personality of Guellen for a long while…” This shows his importance because he was the childhood friend of Claire, and so he is going to be the next Mayor. However, after Claire reveals what Ill did to her in the past, Ill’s status as a respectable man deteriorates drastically and he no longer......
