Joseph Priestly discovered oxygen in 1774. Oxygen is obtained from liquid air. It’s name comes from the Greek words oxus (acid) and gennan (generate). It’s melting point is –218.4*C and it’s boiling point is –183.0*C. Oxygen has 8 protons, 8 electrons, and 8 neutrons. Oxygen is a non-metal and its crystal structure is cubic. Its density at S.T.P. is 1.429g/cm3, and it is a colorless element.
The element Oxygen has 2 energy levels. In the first there are 2 electrons, and in the second there are 6.
Oxygen is the second most common element on Earth, composing around 49% of the mass of Earth’s crust and 28% of the mass of Earth as a whole, and it is the third most common element in the universe. On Earth, it is usually covalently or ionically bonded to other elements.
