In today�s business world, �a merger is defined as a combination of two firms into one, with the acquirer assuming assets and liabilities of the target firm� (Brealey, Marcus, Myers, p. 589). An acquisition �is defined as a takeover of a firm by purchase of that firm�s common stock or asset� (Brealey, Marcus, Myers, p. 590). Throughout this paper, we will assess the impact that mergers and acquisitions have on businesses, including sensible and dubious reason for, benefits and cost of, cash and stock transactions, and the financial risks involved when acquiring an organization in another country, and how those risks could be mitigated. The Impact of a Merger Historically, mergers have not always succeeded; however, they have a direct impact on a business both in a positive and negative manner. On the positive side a mergers impact can range from reducing market competition, cutting costs, reducing taxes, increasing profit, boosting shareholder values for both groups, and operating at a more technologically efficient scale.
