AIDS: Crisis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

One of the greatest medical crisis’ of past century began in the 1980s. It is the AIDS crisis. For the past twenty-five years, millions of people have died from this disease for which there is no cure. It has had a tremendous impact on the American culture and economy. It can strike anyone, from average people to celebrities. It is up to the life of the medical community that a cure will be found during this century. In the early 1980s, some doctors began noticing rare cancers and infections striking, otherwise, healthy young, gay men. Something was destroying their immune systems. It was something fatal and possibly contagious. At first it was called the “gay plague” until others began dying: intravenous drug users, hemophiliacs and heterosexuals. Fear, confusion, and prejudice started as the disease eventually known as AIDS grew from a mystery to an epidemic. AIDS looks like just an acronym; but it is much more than that.
