What is the effect on the audience that we do not meet Othello until Act 1 Scene 2, and what are Shakespeare’s intentions in doing this?
Shakespeare’s play ‘Othello’ tells the tragic story of jealousy, isolation, love and betrayal. Othello, who is a black soldier, has recently eloped with a young and beautiful Venetian woman, Desdemona much to the surprise of her father and one of Othello’s soldiers, Iago. Though the play is entitled ‘Othello’ many could argue that this is Iago’s play as he is the catalyst for every event which occurs and so he spurns the story on. Perhaps this is why we as readers to not meet Othello until Act One scene two.
The play begins with Rodrigo (the village idiot of the play) and Iago discussing money-we catch them mid-conversation and much of this play is based on what has happened previously unlike some of Shakespeare’s other plays. Rodrigo says to Iago “I take it much unkindly that thou, Iago, who hast had my purse as if the strings were thine, shouldst know this.” Rodrigo is questioning why Iago has stolen his money but Iago responds arrogantly a......
