Interview with the Vampire Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Interview with the Vampire by Ann Rice is a dark, Gothic tragedy filled with vampirism, human sexuality, and conflict of morality and reality. Nowhere is this conflict more prevalent than within the main protagonist Louis de Pointe du Lac.
Ninety-nine percent of the book is dialogue, as Louis tells his story to the young boy, and whether or not Louis is a reliable narrator is not completely established. Louis is the hero of the novel, telling his life story to the unnamed interviewer, often paraphrasing dialogue and treating the most heinous of acts as tedious, mundane endeavors. But it is Louis’s motivation as a vampire that is the most intriguing. His greatest wish is fulfilled directly after he loses the ability to strive for it. The tragic nature of the novel pulls the rug from beneath him, and he plummets, trailing the falling action behind him.
[The] uncanny effect that characterizes the vampire tale is attributable to the fact that the demonic adversary is a projection of the ‘buried Self,’ a dark double of both the reader and the fictive protagonist (Foust, 441).
