Outline Malthus’s theory of population and assess his contribution to the reform of the Poor Laws in 1834. Born on the 13th of February 1766 into a well off family and getting his education at the prestigeous Cambridge university, an English demographer and a political economist, Thomas Robert Malthus was known as the most Debatable social scientist of the nineteenth century. He published a pamphlet known as his ‘First Essay on the Principle of Population,’ in 1798 as a critique of the optimistic stances of Jean Antoine Nicholas de Caritait, William Godwin and Marquis de Condorcet. The depressing idea’s depicted in his pamphlet led to the nickname given to economics as the Dismal Science. In the first part of my essay I will be outlining his theory of population presented in his pamphlet and then going onto how it influenced the changes of the Poor Laws in 1834.
