The novel Dibs in Search of Self introduces the reader to a small boys unique journey on how he found his way back to being a normal speaking, playing child. Dibs is a child that doesn�t speak, play and hardly communicates with adults or peers. Anytime his peers try to talk with him he attacks them and claws like a cat. Throughout the novel the reader is taken on Dibs� journey in search of his inner being. Along the way the reader is introduced to Dibs New York background. His upper class wealthy upbringing; his brilliant father who is a scientist; and his mother who was a surgeon before his birth. Both parents resent Dibs and claim in the book he was a mistake, "He was the product of an unwanted pregnancy! It's all my fault!" (Dibs in Search of self). At home Dibs is often locked in his room, mute, unmanageable, and an embarrassment in his parent�s eyes. Dibs is often compared to his sister, an outgoing and charming little girl who lets Mom and Dad experience �success� as parents.
