Continental Philosophy Essay Introduction Philosophy is the study of life in general. It is the basic doctrine of conduct, thought, and the nature of the universe. To understand Continental philosophy�s existentialism and phenomenology as a response to Hegelian Idealism, we need to understand these suppositions. Hegelian Idealism Georg Hegel (1770-1831) structured philosophy within thought. It gave credence to reality by structuring a framework or triad to reach the Absolute or Spirit as a whole. He had stressed, that reality is a sum total of the absolute truth. Everything was interconnected as the one Spirit. He shaped his system with steps containing the being and the not being to create the becoming, a triad (Moore & Bruder, p. 145). Each step of his system generated a link to the next.
