The Force of Friendship Whether or not people choose to recognize it, we have been given a gift unlike any other. What we do with it and how we utilize it is a decision to be made solely by ourselves. You cannot comprehend the true extent of this gift unless you have directly experienced it. Its effect on us and the people around us is huge, but is can appear so subtle that it is rather often taken for granted. Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, often uses the two contrasting themes of friendship and loneliness to create the plot for the story. The characters in the story embody these different themes. The characters that exemplify loneliness are Crooks and Candy’s wife, and Candy, George, and Lennie embody the theme of friendship. These characters’ words and actions reveal their real self, though it may seem deceiving. In Of Mice and Men, there are numerous instances that exhibit the divergent themes of friendship and loneliness and their effects on an individual.
