Symbolisms of Perfumes based on the books Handmaids Tale and Perfume Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Symbolism, ‘the use of visual imagery to represent a message or concept’ (A Glossary of Terms), has a key function and is respectively portrayed in the two novels entitled: Perfume, written by Patrick Süskind, and The Handmaid's Tale, written by Margaret Atwood. In both of these novels, the authors refer to two different specific perfumes as a symbol, which clearly represents something invisible (The Free Dictionary). However, in order to understand both novels it is rather important to describe and understand the subconsciousness of both non-heroic main characters and to describe their desires and necessities to a certain extent. Süskind brings to live Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, an unusual male with a remarkable sense of smell who seeks to produce and perfect several magnificent perfumes, while Atwood creates Offred, a captured female in the Republic of Gilead, an atrocious imaginary futuristic life, as the main character of their stories.
