Symbolisms of Perfumes based on the books Handmaids Tale and Perfume Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Symbolism, ‘the use of visual imagery to represent a message or concept’ (A Glossary of Terms), has a key function and is respectively portrayed in the two novels entitled: Perfume, written by Patrick Süskind, and The Handmaid's Tale, written by Margaret Atwood. In both of these novels, the authors refer to two different specific perfumes as a symbol, which clearly represents something invisible (The Free Dictionary). However, in order to understand both novels it is rather important to describe and understand the subconsciousness of both non-heroic main characters and to describe their desires and necessities to a certain extent. Süskind brings to live Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, an unusual male with a remarkable sense of smell who seeks to produce and perfect several magnificent perfumes, while Atwood creates Offred, a captured female in the Republic of Gilead, an atrocious imaginary futuristic life, as the main character of their stories. Perfume makes reference to numerous other perfumes and the initial perfume mentioned is ‘Amor and Psyche’ (Süskind 50), whereas in The Handmaid's ......
