My Last Duchess �My Last Duchess� by Robert Browning is set in the palace of the Duke of Ferrara. The main characters in the poem are the Duke, the Duchess and the silent listener (an Ambassador of the Count of Tyrol). The poem is written in the form of Dramatic monologue. This specific poetic form presents at least one moment where the main character discusses a topic and reveals his/her personal feelings about the subject at the same time. Throughout the course of the monologue, the main character unwittingly reveals themselves. Only the main character speaks. The main focus of a dramatic monologue is the personal information that the main character is discussing, not the topic which is being discussed. In this particular case, the main focus is the Duke, not the painting of the Duchess. In the poem, the Duke is showing a portrait of his dead wife to an Ambassador of the Count of Tyrol.
