Xerox Corporation: The Customer Satisfaction Program The worldwide copier market was mature and intensely competitive. In the United States, copier placements had grown at a slow rate of 2.9% CAGR between 1984 and 1989. Copier industry was categorized into three product markets: Low-volume market, Mid-volume market and High-volume market. Due to intense competition in low-volume market, copier prices and margins were very low and growth was also flattened by 1990. Asz we moved from low-volume to high-volume market, more machines were leased than bought. About 23 companies competed in the market. Other from the low-volume market, Xerox was the market leader in the other two volume markets. (Exhibit 1) Xerox after launching the first model in 1959, achieved phenomenal growth and completely dominated the world copier market through the 1960s and into the early 1970s.
