Comparison and Contrast of Hester Prynne and Roger Dimmesdale Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Scarlet Letter, a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, focuses on what happens to a young woman, Hester, who commits adultery and has baby in a Puritan town. The father of the child, Dimmesdale, holds high respect in the town and never steps forward as the father of the child. Throughout the seven year period, Hester endures the towns ridicule alone, while Dimmesdale is burned by his guilt. Although Hester and Dimmesdale are parents of Pearl, they share many similarities and differences and are both dynamic characters. Throughout the book, Hester is described in terms of light and dark. As soon as she is introduced Hawthorne describes her with in comparison with a sun, “She had dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam” (Hawthorne 40). In most cases she is viewed as a figure in the light; however, because she did in fact sin and commit adultery, she still had a darkness factor to her. “It was only the darkened house that could contain her.
