Ancient and Modern Buddhism The ancient religion of Buddhism was initiated in about 533 BC in northern India. Main aspects are worship of the Buddha, peace, and ethics and it is interesting to see how Buddhist women have changed throughout the times. The Buddha, born Siddhartha Gautama, was enlightened and his teachings evolved into the religion of Buddhism. Peace and ethics are significant ideas in Buddhism. Women originally didn’t have equal rights at the time of the Buddha, however nowadays society for Buddhist women has greatly evolved. Buddhism has revolutionized throughout the years; however its basic elements are still very relevant to the religion today. Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, who is better known as the Buddha. He was the son of Suddhodana, ruler of the Sakya people, and had a luxurious childhood. His father, aware of his families’ opulence and the rest of society’s poverty, ordered Siddhartha to live a life of seclusion, segregated from those less fortunate than him.
