What are the most common types of assessment you have seen used in your subject or age phase? � Describe their value in focusing teaching and learning. � How easy is it to decide whether the learners� performance has met the specified criteria contained within the appropriate national frameworks? � Make reference to observed practice and your reading in your answer. There are three types of assessment, normative, criterion based and diagnostic and a myriad of ways to use each of them. (Irish National Teacher�s Organization (INTO) 1986) Normative assessment compares each student�s work to the others and in effect gives a ranking of performance. Criterion based assessment compares the student�s work to a pre-determined set of outcomes and gives an indication of how well the student can meet the criterion or objectives. Diagnostic and self-referenced assessment compares the student to their previous performance and can be used to pin-point strengths and weaknesses.
