ERP – software or business processes? The somewhat newly coined term Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is commonly misunderstood by being associated just with software solutions. Rather, the concept is more about the people and the business processes in the company, than the utilized software application, but the synergy among them assures the best results. While contemplating how to explain the background of the issue, I remembered one quote from Carl Sagan, who wrote: "We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology.” Bringing this sentence to its contemporary sense, I was amazed how much it was accurate. Let’s assume he is right, and take the two variables as the most important ones in the context of a company. The science will represent the knowledge of the company, taking in account the summary of the levels of knowledge, experience and skills of all the employees and the synergy among them.
