Chicago is set in the 1920s and is a film about an aspiring musical performer Roxie Hart who yearns for a life of fame and fortune. Roxie finds herself, after shooting her boyfriend dead, an infamous prisoner. While in jail Roxie meets Velma Kelly, a well-known jazz singer. Roxie has always looked up to Velma however soon after their encounter there is a developing competitive rivalry between the two for fortune, fame and freedom. Billy Flynn who is renowned for being a criminal lawyer mastermind is the key to the girls� freedom and ends up representing both girls. The confinement of the prison although physically restraining Roxie, imaginatively allows her to embark on this imaginative journey which is driven by her infamous reputation and aspirations to be in the spotlight and ultimately a star. The film text visually demonstrates Roxies imaginative journey through musical performances drawing inspiration from the reality of her situation and the creativity of her mind.
