Motifs in Death of a Salesman Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Motifs are essential in literature as they emphasize a point or express an important message. In Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller uses theft as a motif, which is seen throughout the play, to emphasize an important message. One of the main characters, Biff Loman steals on many occasions, including a valuable football and even an expensive gold fountain pen. At the beginning of the play, stealing is encouraged by his father Willy in the belief that it can lead to some kind of gain. However, Biff begins to learn the hard way that stealing has its consequences. Stealing as a motif is used to reveal how it can either limit or destroy any chances of achievement and comes with a negative repercussion. The motif is first used to show how stealing is encouraged in the play because of the idea that it may somehow lead to success. Biff “borrows” a football from the locker room at his high school. Although Willy knows Biff has stolen the ball he decides, “sure, he’s gotta practice with a regulation ball, doesn’t he? Coach’ll probably congratulate you on your initiative!”(Miller,pg.30).
