What effect does temperature have on the rate of reaction between marble chips and hydrochloric acid?
Our class has been looking at the things that affect the rate of reaction. I thought it would be interesting to see how changing the temperature affects the rate of reaction.
Marble chips react with hydrochloric acid:
CaCO3 + 2HCL ------- CaCL2 + C02 + H2O
This is a good reaction to study because the carbon dioxide given off can be collected and measured at various intervals.
Variables:
I will investigate the temperature and the mass of marble chips. I would expect more marble chips to give a greater amount of Co2. I would expect it to produce carbon dioxide faster as the bigger the surface area the more contact there is with the acid. The size of the marble chips is another key variable, the larger the surface area the quicker the reaction. This is because there is a greater amount of surface area in contact with the hydrochloric acid. The greater the concentrations of acid the faster the reaction as there are more acid particles to collide with the marb......
