Amy Chua’s project in her essay “A World on the Edge” is to explore the problems with a free market system, specifically the creation of market-dominant minorities—“ethnic minorities who, for widely varying reasons, tend under market conditions to dominate economically, often to a startling extent, the ‘indigenous’ majorities around them” (Chua 3). Market-dominant minorities acquire most of the wealth in nations that they thrive in economically, causing ethnic envy and hatred. Chua’s purpose is to inform the readers of the causes of ethnic violence and problems with factors such as globalization and the institution of democracy. She gives information supporting her arguments and counterarguments to give the readers an opposing side’s views. Chua argues that creating more markets and democracy may help economically and politically, but it too adds to the problem of market-dominant minorities. Chua offers examples of countries that struggle with market-dominant minorities to support her claims.
