In Ian McEwan’s Atonement and Harry Mulisch’s The Assault, the two authors incorporate medicine as a profession into their novels. This is done through the books’ two main characters in their goal of coping with something that had occurred in their past. In The Assault, Anton uses his profession as an anaesthesiologist to help him forget about the murder of his family. In Atonement, the main character Briony Tallis uses her occupation as a World War Two nurse to ‘atone’ for the lie she told as a girl that resulted in the severance of a relationship between her sister Cecilia, and Robbie Turner. Though there may be similarities between the circumstances in which the medical profession is used, both authors aim to achieve a specific reaction from the reader when taking into consideration the events that that encircles the characters in their work. Similarly, the authors set out to show how their characters experiences in their profession, and the reasons surrounding why they chose it.
