�Dulce Et Decorum Est� by Wilfred Owen is one of the powerful but bloody poems written during the first world war. This poem clearly shows the horrors that soldiers had to face every day. It is set in the desolate trenches of France, where some of the most violent battles of World War One took place. �Dulce Et Decorum Est� is an extract from an ancient Latin poem written by Horace and it means how �how sweet and fitting�. Owen uses this in a sarcastic tone in this poem. The opening verse shows the bleak surroundings and horrific conditions the soldiers had to deal with. The soldiers are marching towards a �distant rest� which tells us they still have a long march ahead of them and that they probably won�t rest until they reach their destination. They are �Bent Double like beggars under sacks� which also suggests they haven�t rested in sometime and that they are so exhausted they are struggling to stand up.
