Hawthorne explores moral struggles and the effects they have on the human soul in this story through his remarkable ability of incorporating symbolism into his writing. To get an in-depth understanding of Hawthorne’s, “The Scarlet Letter” one must delve into the characters of the story and the significance of his use of symbols through multiple perspectives— Historical, Feminist and Psychological.
The story is about a woman, Hester Prynne, in Puritan New England that gives birth to a child due to an adulterous affair and refuses to name the father of the child. Her punishment for the sin is to wear a scarlet “A” upon her breast to remind her of her adulterous sin and to be publicly humiliated.
