In a world as complex and full of so many competing forces as the one portrayed in �As You Like It�, the absolute best one can hope for is consensus, but never complete agreement. Shakespeare portrays Jacques as a moody cynic who views life as a poetical contemplation because of the unsatisfying nature of the world. As a philosopher, he questions much of what he sees around him. Jacques� motive is the gratification of a self-regarding curiosity based on a kind of personal impotence, an ability to participate fully in the process of life. Jacques�s refusal to resume life in the dukedom not only confirms the impression of his character, but also resonates within the play, the play�s promise of its title: everyone gets just what he or she wants. Jacques delights in being sad, a conflicting role in a play that so enchants with happiness and humor.
