One of the major characters in The Things They Carried who illustrates madness and irrational behavior is Jimmy Cross. His lack of leadership and responsibility ultimately kills one of the soldiers under his command. He loses focus with his thoughts on Martha and his love for her. His actions afterwards construct his character in ways that bring out his leadership and responsibility. He is the only character that directs his men to be �more like soldiers� by taking charge of his Company. While his madness for love over Martha grows, his focus is lost between him and his soldiers. In a sense, he grows distant among them and depends on Martha to get him through the war. Before that accident happens, Jimmy Cross is so consumed by his thoughts of Martha, suggesting he is not focused on his mission at hand. His own men see it as well, �Lieutenant Cross gazed at that tunnel. But he was not there.� His character demonstrates his lack of responsibility and lets his men get away with wasting their gear.
