EU Tariffs on Leather Shoes On February 23, 2006, the European Union confirmed that they were to impose protective tariffs on leather shoes from China and Vietnam. An analysis will be offered giving details of the tariff�s reasons for implication, its specifications, and the economic impact of the trade barrier. In order to gain a complete understanding of the recently imposed import tariffs in the European Union on leather shoes, the economic situation in the industry must be analyzed. A nine month European Union investigation found very compelling evidence of Chinese and Vietnamese leather shoe manufacturers heavily dumping shoes into Europe at ridiculously low prices. In fact, leather shoes from China were found to be priced in Europe at up to 80% of their normal value and 50% of their normal value from Vietnam. This caused shoe imports to accelerate dramatically. The European Union claims, �� imports of leather shoes from China soared 320% in the 12 months up to March 2005 to 950m pairs.
