Narcotics are the most used and abused drugs nation wide, with over 30 million people in the United States. The word �narcotics� derived from the Greek word stupor (meaning to dull the senses and to relieve pain). The poppy papavor somniferum was grown in the Mediterranean around 5000 B.C. This plant seeps a milky substance that is scraped and air-dried to produce opium. There are now many new methods to produce these drugs. As you may know common household products, like baking soda, and Sudafed can be used to make these types of drugs. Morphine, Codeine, Demerol, Methadone, and Darvon are some narcotics that doctors use to elevate pain for their patients, help suppress a cough, eliminate diarrhea, and induce anesthesia. Crack cocaine, opium, heroin are some of the main illegal drugs used today. Narcotics can be smoked, sniffed, injected, or swallowed. They can be in pill form, liquid (drip/syringe), or powdered.
