Democratic Instability of Weimar Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The democratic instability of Weimar Germany can be explained in three essential components: cultural explanations, institutional explanations, and economical explanations. Non-liberal views and not accepting democracy as the only “game in town” caused an instable democracy in Weimar Germany. Germans did not have most of the key norms of liberalism. They were highly intolerant of opposing views. The public opinion was very polarized. Since there was a crucial class difference, the notion of egalitarianism was also not entrenched. The notion of democracy was also new in Germany (1919). Democracy in Europe was seen as dangerous; this notion fueled the extremist’s solutions. According to Putnam, high level of civic culture should make democracy stable. Northeim Germany had 1 club for every 60 people. The voting rate in Northeim was 94-97%. Germany had a rich associational life. Putnam’s argument is challenged, because it is not the level of civic culture that matters as much as the type of civic culture.
