Death is not an easy topic for most people. However, it is a topic we all must deal with in our lifetimes. Increasingly, death is becoming a topic of not only acceptance, but also decision making and ambiguous definition due to technology. In Kaufman’s book “…and a time to die” she experiences and tries to decipher what she can of the dying process within American institutions such as hospitals, hospices and other forms of end of life care. First she talks about death and it’s complications as a predicament, a new kind of problem arising in American society. Second she speaks to the “time and power of the pathway”, referring to the institutionalized systems set up inside the hospitals and hospices which guide them and their end of life decisions. Third, she debates the usage and manipulations of definitions within the hospitals and general American society. In all Kaufman reveals to the reader what’s happening in today’s American society and hopefully how we can do our best to avoid an unnatural mechanical death.
