“William Shakespeare comic looks at male sexism and women’s lib in the 16th century” Bringing the original play to life in two different perspectives from two different films Directors Zeffirelli and Gil Junger, have “reinvented” Shakespeare’s plays, attempting to modernise them to a current audience, focusing in particular on its main character, katherina, and how her image has been portrayed as a woman and changed to adapt a modern society. Throughout both films different messages are thrown at the audiences as to how a woman has the right to speak out and stand up for herself. In both films the characters from the very start of the film give the impression that they have an attitude, are both tough and at the same time different to an everyday woman, especially seen in “the taming of the shrew” katherina is loud, shouts a lot, throws items at people and is unapproachable, throughout the film there was fear in people’s eyes when they might had to deal with katherina.
