The Confederacy�s most celebrated general inspired an out-manned, out-gunned army to achieve greatness on the battlefield. Robert Edward Lee is considered to be one of America�s greatest military commanders. He was a brilliant strategist and had a keen sense for the contours of a battlefield. Lee�s genius during the Civil War impacted history in many ways. Lee was born on January 19, 1807 to former General Henry �Light Horse� Lee and Ann Hill Carter, in Stratford Hall near Montross, Virginia. His parents raised Robert with strong beliefs and values his father enforced consistently from an early age. Robert had a tremendous love for his state, country, and the rural lifestyle. As a young boy, he enjoyed hunting and playing with his friends. Lee learned to read at an early age and remained an enthusiastic reader his entire life.
