"Mu’awiya’s claim to the caliphate was due to his lust for power and status. The death of Hassan & Hussein, nomination of Yazid as next caliph and lack of Islamic practice affirm his position against Ali as one of personal gain. Do you agree/disagree?" Discuss. The clash between Ali, the fourth of the rightly guided caliphs, and Mu’awiya, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty, had its rivalry throughout history. The Hashimites and the Umayyads were cousins and there was usual rivalry and hostility between them, all within the tribe of the Quraysh. During the time of Abd-al-Muttalib the leadership of the Quraysh was put into the hands of the Hashimites. After the death of Abd-al-Muttalib the leadership passed on to the Umayyads. When the Prophet Muhammad declared his mission, the Umayyads were in the front position in opposition to the Holy Prophet. Apart from religious debates, one of the grounds for such opposition was the hesitation of the Umayyads that if Islam gained strength, the leadership would pass on to the Hashimites.
