Linda Nochlin argues that genius is not the catalyst for creating art; anyone, male or female, can be a great artist. Unlike males, however, women are not nurtured or encouraged by society to become artists. While this is generally valid, some aspects are no longer true. When the question “why have there been no great women artists” is posed, some women say there should be a different standard for women’s art than men’s. Since women have achieved a reasonable amount of equality, they cannot turn around and expect the standards to be relaxed just so that they can join the male competition. There has never been a female Michelangelo or Picasso, no amount of manipulating the past or reevaluating women artists is going to prove this wrong. Nochlin discusses the theory of the “golden nugget” (genius) being the answer to why there have been no great women artists – that women do not have the innate genius - but dismisses this theory as a myth of the male dominated arts structures.
