ABSTRACT Guidance and counseling is distinguished from allied terms like rendering advice, consoling, helping, and nursing or caring for needy persons. It is also different from formal, skilled, trained or technical activities like psychotherapy. There are important elements and assumptions underlying the process of professional counseling. In fact, the meaning of counseling is better understood by understanding what is NOT counseling! There are various types of counseling as there are several indications/contraindications for carrying out this activity in the context of handling parents, caregivers and children with reading/writing problems. To begin with, the first few sessions are required to focus on diagnostic counseling. This is to be followed by intervention based sessions on counseling the child and their caregivers. This facilitates them to overcome the series of psychological reactions that typically parents undergo upon learning that their child has a special problem.
