This management also prevented land degredation. Indigenous Australians “lived by food gathering and hunting” (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2001) moving from place to place in order to preserve food sources in different areas, or as these food sources’ availability varied. This is also known as having a ‘nomadic’ lifestyle. One of the techniques they used was the use of fire, commonly known as ‘firestick farming’, in order to “enhance its viability to attract fauna species to range on, enabling access for hunting and gathering or to promote regeneration of plant life that relied on this technique for its reproduction” (Wickman, 1998).
