Sin is the harbinger of freedom, one might think after reading Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The sinful, morally complex slave gains her freedom whereas the one who follows Christ’s example of piety dies violently. Uncle Tom, who steadfastly follows the Bible’s teachings, is killed on his mater’s orders. Yet Cassy, the gothic “she-devil”(420), avoids Tom’s fate and goes on to live happily ever after, in spite of her unchristian tendencies. This flies in the face of Stowe’s insinuations that those who follow in Jesus’ footsteps will be rewarded. Thus, in Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the turn towards the Gothic—a world wherein Christian humbleness results in death, and sexuality combined with devilish guile produce freedom— seems to undermine the author’s previous sentimental argument that a recognition of Christian values is all that’s needed to end slavery, although it’s ultimate effect is to show that slavery can make the world become a dreadful place. Throughout his stay on Legree’s plantation, Uncle Tom keeps his faith in God, and his death is the result. Singin......
