In the Norse tales, wisdom is a commodity. It can be passed from one person to another, or gained by eating the heart of a mystical beast, or drinking from an enchanted well. To these people, wisdom was something tangible, and very valuable. Today, we might refer to this kind of wisdom as knowledge, information, or to put an even more modern perspective on it, data. Today, we can look up our ancestry on a website, but to someone like Ottar, discovering his lineage was a quest that required the assistance of a goddess (The Song of Hyndla, Larrington). We can pop in a CD that will teach us Spanish, but for Sigurd, the learning of foreign tongues from Regin was a great honor reserved for kings (The Birth of Sigurd, Byock). Due to the impracticality of runes as a written language, all forms of knowledge had to be passed on orally. This is why poetry, being easier to memorize than prose, became so important in this culture.
