Storage Devices and How They Affect the Speed of A Computer Today�s computers have various ways to store data. Some such devices are hard disk, floppy disk, RAM, CD ROM, and USB Memory Stick. Some of these devices store data internally and some store data externally. The speed in which a computer can process stored data is affected by each of these. This paper will look at each of these storage devices and explain ways to store data to obtain optimal processing speed. Internal storage devices are the hard disk or more commonly referred to as the hard drive and RAM (random access memory). The hard disk is an internal device that stores data. Data that is stored to the hard disk remains there forever until permanently erased. All operating systems and application �instructions� are stored here. Without a hard disk, a computer would not know to start Windows� and make the desktop and other applications accessible to the user.
