The Mariana Island�s, are located east of the Philippine Islands. The islands were first discovered by Ferdinand Magellan on March 6 1521. The islands have been given many different names until the Spanish officially made the islands one of their own colonies. The Spanish called the islands, Las Marianas, in honor of the Spanish Queen Mariana of Austria. The island of Guam was ceded over to the United States in 1898, as a result of the Spanish-American War. The Northern islands were then treated over to Germany in early 1899 for about 800,000 marks. (roughly $4,000,000 then) The Northern Islands were then handed over to Japan, after Germany lost WI. The islands remained in Japanese control until 1944, when the United States saw the strategic location was in range of their air bombers. The United States claimed Guam as a territory after the war. Later in 1975, in talk with the Northern Islands, the US claimed the islands as a common wealth.
