Myths are common through out all religions. They provide an explanation of facts, natural or cultural and validate the existence of a social system and traditional rites and customs (Bastain, 2). They are a way of interpreting reality and giving things meaning. In Native American cultures myths also serve as an important guide for teaching other members of the community (Bastain, 3). Creation stories are a type of myth that explains the existence of life and how the earth came to be. Religious myths are important to the study of religion because they give insight to the beliefs and rituals of a particular culture or religion.
The Apache creation story begins with no earth, sky, sun or moon only darkness. From the darkness a thin disc appears suspended in air a small bearded man sits on this disc, he is the creator, the one who lives above (Apache).
