�The Anthills of the Savannah� is a story set in very difficult times for the main characters. Chris, Ikem, Beatrice, and also Elewa face many problems and difficulties throughout the book, but still they continue their search for change, change for the better of the country and the people. The rather surprising ending of the book does not result in their success in this search for happiness and better times. The deaths of Chris and Ikem, seemingly senseless and undoubtedly brutal, and the overall impression of hopelessness in the current political situation of the country, leave the reader feeling perhaps dissatisfied, even despondent, at the novel�s conclusion. However, Achebe does leave a certain sense of optimism in the end and it could be argued that there are some elements of hope and unity that linger on amidst the overwhelming loss. Throughout the story, Chris, Beatrice, and of course Ikem are in constant pursuit of change and reform in the political structure and function in the country.
