Were the Anglo-Powhatan Wars Avoidable? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Anglo-Powhatan Wars were two wars that consisted of battles between the English and the Native Indians. The first war lasted from 1610-1614 and ended with a peace settlement. The second war lasted from 1622-1632. During these two years, the English totally defeated the Native Americans, and the Indians were forced off their own land.
The first war, I think, is questionable to whether it was avoidable or not. During this war, Thomas West and his English men raided the Indian villages burning houses and torching cornfields. To me this is just asking for the Indians to stand up for themselves. They have settled this land for years, and now some strangers want to come in and take it over. The Indians were about to run the Englishmen out of Jamestown, but were unsuccessful. A peace settlement ended the war in 1614, and it was sealed by the marriage of Pocahontas to the colonist John Rolfe. “This was the first known inter-racial union in Virginia, and helped usher in a brief period of better relations between the Native Americans and newcomers” (Wikipedia.com).
