Violence played an integral role in the Nazi consolidation of power. According to source 4 it was “the strategy of the authorities…to give free reign to instincts of violence” and “every day there were new abominations” [source 5]. However, on the surface the Nazi seizure of power was achieved through legal means, such as Hitler being appointed chancellor by Hindenburg, success in Reichstag elections and decrees such as the Decree for the Protection of the German People. In fact, violence and intimidation went hand in hand with many legal measures - the Night of the Long knives was legalised, with the Reich Cabinet “approving a law on measures for the self defense of the state” [source 2], and the Decree for the Protection of People and State suspended all constitutional liberties and allowed the police to hold people in protective custody without trial.
