The diagnosis of schizophrenia is very controversial, often misused and often socially damaging to patients.(Sumrall) The cause of schizophrenia is not known. Scientists are not even sure if it is one disorder or several with different causes ,although there are many theories and a great deal of research into possibilities. Schizophrenia is defined as a group of disorders characterized by impaired cognition processes, personality integration, affective disturbances and social withdrawal. Symptoms may include psychotic manifestations, such as delusional thoughts and hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized/catatonic behavior and/or motor disturbances. There are 2 types of symptoms. Positive symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or thinking, disorganized behavior, and catatonic behavior. Negative symptoms are that in which the patient has flat affect-little or no emotions in situation that require it, avolition-difficulty to persist in a goal and alogia- deprivation of speech and may reflect a loss of normal functioning.
