Phonology of the Gamilaraay language Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Gamilaraay or Kamilaroi (other spellings include: Camilaroi, Kamalarai, Gamilaroi) language belongs to the Wiradhuric subgroup of the Pama-Nyungan family. It is an indigenous Australian language found mostly in South East Australia (Barwon, Bundarra, Balonne rivers, Liverpool Plains and upper Hunter River, central northern New South Wales). The traditional language of the Kamilaroi people is reported to be nearly extinct – according to Ethnologue it had only three speakers (data from 1997) belonging to one family and teaching it in schools as community visitors. However, as a result of local initiatives and with support from the New South Wales government, Gamilaraay is currently undergoing language revival as it is being taught both in adult education and primary school classes and an increasing flow of publications, both paper and electronic, appear.
