The Vietnam War is one the most controversial wars in American history. The objectives and purposes of the war were unclear to the soldiers as well as the citizens of the United States. Due to constant protests, President Richard Nixon ordered the last American troops out in 1973. Although, the fighting ended, Vietnam had a lasting effect on American soldiers. Soldiers still suffer from feelings of guilt, loneliness, rage, emotional deadness, intense nightmares, flashbacks, and outbursts of violence. These feelings and actions are symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or most commonly called PTSD. Americans are still trying to figure out the exact causes of PTSD and why soldiers in Vietnam are more likely to suffer from them. However, one can look to history and literature to help discover the answers to this question. Jonathan Shay’s book, Achilles in Vietnam, compares the soldiers of Vietnam to the Greek soldiers of Homer’s Iliad. In both cases, soldiers, in particular Achilles, suffer psychological breakdowns as a result military leader’s laps......
