Population Patterns and HIV/AIDS Population patterns-regionalization Regionalization is a classification of locations with one or more traits in common (Norton, 2007). Over the past century, India has experienced phenomenal population growth, entering the new millennium with a population of over one billion (Haub and Sharma, 2006). Rapid population increase was largely seen in the northern regions such as Madhya and Pradesh (Ghosh, 2002). In the 1970s, due to governmental efforts to control population growth, birth rates began to decline. Fertility rates have declined the most in the southern regions, such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka (Haub and Sharma, 2006). The ratio of male to female is 5:1 (or 113 boys per 100 girls) in most regions of India; this is attributed to higher values placed on males in society. This caused a widespread abortion of female fetuses, a practice banned in 1994 (Haub and Sharma, 2006). The majority of the population (72%) lives in rural villages of less than 5000 people.
