Martha Graham was considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. She is one of the greatest figures of American modern dance, so great that today her techniques and styles are still practiced. She quickly became widely known after her first debut in the 1920’s. Martha Graham allowed emotion to take over the stage and overwhelm her audiences. Although Martha Graham’s style of choreography was considered controversial, she is now known to be one of the world’s finest dancers and choreographers.
Martha Graham was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania on May 11, 1894 to Jane Beers and George Graham. Her father was a well-known physician who treated nervous and mental disorders. At the age of fourteen Graham and her family moved to Santa Barbara, California in order to help her sister, Mary who had a repertory condition. Here is where two years later Martha would find her passion for dance.
