The soles of my feet throbbed in agony from contact with the grassy track, my lungs begging me to give in to exhaustion and overexertion. Five meters. I urged myself onwards towards the final threshold, picturing myself as a cheetah hunting a gazelle: completely focused on its goal. My dad gave me a round of high-fives after I finished the race that day, the last of my freshman year, crossing the finish line as number one seventy-five with a time of twenty minutes and fifteen seconds.
